Position Description: Docent and Assistant to the Museum Director
The McDuffie Museum, opened in 2009, strives to instill in the citizens of McDuffie County, especially its youth, an understanding of their heritage and a sense of pride in the history of their community. Governed by a Board of Directors and currently staffed by a group of volunteers, the Museum seeks to retain a part-time employee to serve as Docent and Assistant to the Museum Director. Duties include:
- Greeting visitors, giving directions, and explaining exhibits to visitors
- Helping to set up, move, and change exhibits and collections
- Assisting with organizing, packing, labelling, and storing items in the Museum’s inventory – both existing and newly donated items
- Giving tours to individuals or groups
- Selling catalogues, books, postcards and other souvenirs in the museum shop
- Checking displays periodically to ensure they are in order
- Performing general reception duties such as answering telephones, maintaining records, or taking bookings
- Helping to keep the museum clean and in good order (working with the professional cleaning service)
- Assisting with upkeep of Museum’s website and other marketing efforts
- Assisting with preparation of grant proposals and applications
Hours – Flexible, with Museum open 10 hours per week (Friday and Saturday afternoons); up to an additional 10 hours per week at own pace
Salary – $15 per hour
